How to Change the Map on Your GMod Server

Maps in GMod are the playable worlds your server loads. Some are wide open for sandbox building, others are designed for roleplay, horror, or team-based game modes. Changing the map can completely shift the experience for your players.

If you're using a host like Nexus, switching maps is quick and easy.

Step 1: Log in

Log in to your Nexus Hosting Account.

Step 2: Select the Server

Once on the dashboard, find and select the intended Garry’s Mod server.

Step 3: Make Sure the Map is Available

Before you switch, check that the map is already installed on your server.

Built-in maps like gm_flatgrass or gm_construct are available by default. If you're using a custom map from the Steam Workshop, make sure it's either included in your Workshop collection or manually uploaded to the maps folder on your server.

If the server can't find the map, it may fail to start.

To upload a map manually, go to the Files tab in the sidebar. Open the garrysmod folder, then the maps folder. From there, click the red Upload button to add your .bsp file.

Step 4: Change the Map Name

In the sidebar, click on Startup. This is where you can change important launch settings, including the default map.

Find the field labeled Map. You’ll likely see it set to something like gm_construct or gm_flatgrass. Replace that with the name of the map you want to use. Be sure to type the name exactly as it appears in the maps folder, but leave out the .bsp file extension.

Step 5: Restart the Server

Once you’ve entered the new map name, it’s time to restart the server. Click the orange Restart button in the top right corner.
