How to Install DarkRP or Helix Gamemodes for your GMOD Server

Garry’s Mod is built around flexibility, and switching out the default Sandbox gamemode for something like DarkRP or Helix is one of the most common ways to completely change how your server plays.

DarkRP is one of the most popular roleplay gamemodes. It’s built for jobs, money systems, player-owned properties, and servers with big communities. Helix, on the other hand, is more of a lightweight framework for serious RP projects. It’s modular and customizable, often used for lore-heavy or custom-built experiences like military or sci-fi servers.

You can install either gamemode quickly using the Nexus Hosting panel.

Step 1: Log in 

Log in to your Nexus Hosting Account.

Step 2: Select the Server

Once on the dashboard, find and select the intended Garry’s Mod server. 

Step 3: Find the Custom Mod Section

Look for a section labeled Custom Mod in the sidebar. This provides access to the Mod Manager where you will see DarkRP and Helix listed, as well as their versions. 

Step 4: Install Gamemode Mod

Find the gamemode you want to install and click the Install button. The system will automatically download and set up the files in the correct directories.

Once the installation finishes, you’re ready to set the server to load that gamemode by default.

Step 5: Change Gamemode

From the sidebar, click on Startup. In the Gamemode field, enter the name of the mod you just installed – either darkrp or helix (all lowercase).

Once saved, your server will load that gamemode by default the next time it starts.
