How to Make a Player an OP in Minecraft

Want to give yourself or someone else operator (OP) privileges on your Minecraft server?

Running a Minecraft server is a blast. From building epic creations with friends to managing a bustling community. An OP can help you create some fun interactions, welcome new players with gifts, and boot troublesome players. They do this through special operator commands, such as:

/gamemode <mode> [player]: Switches game modes. For example, /gamemode creative Joe puts Joe in Creative mode.

/tp <player> <target>: Teleports players around the map. Try `/tp Alex Joe`to move Alex to Joe’s location, or /tp Alex 100 50 200 for specific coordinates.

/kick <player> [reason]: Boots a player off the server. Use /kick Griefer Stop breaking stuff to send a message along with the kick.

/ban <player> [reason]: Permanently bans someone who’s causing trouble or griefing others.

/give <player> <item> [amount]: Hands out items to players. For instance, /give Joe minecraft:golden_apple 5 gives Joe 5 golden apples to enjoy.

/weather <type> [duration]: Changes the weather on the server. `/weather clear`stops a downpour, or /weather rain 600 sets rain for 10 minutes (600 seconds).

/difficulty <level>: Sets the game’s difficulty. /difficulty hard will make those creepers extra spicy.

/stop: Shuts down the server safely.

These are just a small taste of what an OP can do. For a comprehensive list of all OP commands, check out https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Commands.

It's best to give OP status to trusted players. People you know won't abuse the power to mess with the server or other players.

Step 1:

Log in to your Nexus Hosting Account.

Nexuscore Login

Step 2:

Once on the dashboard, find and select your intended Minecraft server.

Server list

Step 3:

Nexus Hosting Panel automatically opens to the Terminal page, but if you’ve navigated away, just click the Terminal icon in the left sidebar.

Select Terminal in sidebar

Step 4:

On this page, you’ll find the Console or Terminal for your Minecraft server. To make a player an op, type the following command and press Enter:

/op [username]

![Enter /op username]

Step 5:

If you were successful in making the targeted user a server operator, the terminal output should read:

Made [username] a server operator.

Success message

Troubleshooting

Normally, if you’re using Nexus Hosting, it should accept a username as an OP, even if they haven’t logged into the server yet. But if you get an error saying the player doesn’t exist, here are a few things to check:

Double-check the username you’re typing. Minecraft usernames are case-sensitive, so /op alex won’t work if their name is Alex.

Make sure the player has joined the server at least once. Tell them to open Minecraft (Java Edition), go to Multiplayer, and select Add Server. Then, they can input your Minecraft server’s IP address and join.

## How to Remove a Player’s OP status?

To remove a player’s OP status in Minecraft, just type deop <username> in the server console and hit Enter. This immediately revokes their operator powers.
