How to Set Up Automated Backups for Your Minecraft Server

Losing your Minecraft world – after countless hours building epic creations – would be devastating. But manually backing up your Minecraft world can be a chore, especially if you need to remember to do it every day. Automated backups save you the hassle by regularly creating safe copies of your server so you can restore it if anything goes wrong.

Nexus Hosting offers a quick and easy way to set up scheduled automatic backups so you never have to worry about losing your data again.

Step 1:

Log in to your Nexus Hosting Account.

Step 2:

Once on the dashboard, find and select your intended Minecraft server.

Step 3:

Select the Schedules icon from the sidebar.

Step 4:

You’ll see any scheduled events you’ve set up here. Click Create schedule to start a new one.

Step 5:

Give your schedule a clear name (for example, “Automated Server Backup”).

Next, configure how often it should run using the Cron job syntax.

A cron job consists of five fields (minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week).
For instance, 0 3 means “run at 3:00 AM every day,” while /5 means “run every 5 minutes.”
If you need help, toggle SHOW CHEATSHEET for examples. You can also read more about the Cron job scheduling format here.

A good default is to run backups once a day during off-peak hours when the fewest players are online. For example, 4:00 AM (server time) is often a quiet period. The corresponding cron schedule would be 0 4

When you’ve set your cron schedule and reviewed the toggles, click Create schedule.

Step 6:

Your new schedule now appears in the list. Select it, then click New Tas k.

Note: You can change the Cron job scheduling at any time by clicking Edit.

Step 7:

From the ACTION dropdown, choose Create backup. If you’d like to exclude any files or folders (e.g., logs, plugins you don’t need to back up), you can list those within the IGNORED FILES field.

Click Create Task once you’re done.

Step 7:

All set! You can click Run Now to immediately create a backup or wait until your scheduled time. The next scheduled run time is displayed under the schedule name.

To view (or restore) a backup, click the Backups icon in the sidebar.**
