Understanding Tickrate on Your GMod Server (And How to Change It)

Tickrate controls how often your GMod server updates — basically, how many times per second it processes everything: player movement, physics, damage, entity behavior, and more.

The default tickrate for most GMod servers is 22 to 33 ticks per second, which means the server updates about every 20 to 30 milliseconds. This is fine for most casual play, but if you want smoother movement, faster hit detection, or more responsive physics (especially in combat-heavy or competitive setups), you may want to bump that up to 66 or even 100.

What Does a Higher Tickrate Do?

  • Improves responsiveness: Player actions like shooting, moving, or interacting feel tighter and more accurate.

  • Smooths physics and entity behavior: Things like doors, props, and NPCs behave more consistently with fewer jittery moments.

  • Increases CPU usage: The trade-off is that higher tickrates require more server resources. So if you're on lower-tier hosting, increasing it too much could cause lag or instability.

For most servers, 66 is a solid middle ground between smooth performance and manageable CPU load.
