How to Change Your Minecraft Server's Game Mode

Changing the game mode on your Minecraft server lets you control the kind of experience your players will have. Minecraft has four different game modes for you can choose from:

Survival – Classic Minecraft with health, hunger, and resource gathering.

Creative – Unlimited blocks, flying, and no health/damage.

Adventure – Designed for custom maps. Blocks can't be broken without proper tools.

Spectator – Fly through blocks and observe the world without interacting. A great option if you are hosting an event on your server and want to view (and potentially record) different players quickly.

Step 1: Log in

Log in to your Nexus Hosting Account.

Step 2: Select the Server

Once on the dashboard, find and select your intended Minecraft server.

Step 3: Open server.properties

To change the game mode for the entire server, click Files in the sidebar. Locate and select the server.properties file from the list.

Step 4: Set the Game Mode

Find the gamemode setting and change the value to your game mode of choice.

Then click Save Content.

Step 5: Change Game Mode for Individual Players

If you want different players to use different game modes – for example, you stay in Creative to build while others play in Survival – you can set this manually using the console or in-game (if you have OP privileges). The command is the same in both cases:

gamemode <gamemode> [<target>]
